PPI, a key player in Groupe SOS’s field engagement to structure the Social and Solidarity Economy

20 November 2024 • NEWS

In Madagascar, the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) is increasingly seen as a sustainable alternative, addressing the country’s social, economic, and environmental challenges.

PPI -People Power Inclusion —one of five NGOs within Groupe SOS—is a key player in this dynamic. Through its support and guidance, PPI has been instrumental for numerous local organizations, including JADD Madagascar. Acting as a catalyst for local initiatives, PPI actively contributes to enhancing the capacities of grassroots actors and promotes an inclusive, cooperative, and locally conscious economic model.

Focus on the collaboration between PPI and a local NGO: JADD Madagascar.

JADD’s commitment to sustainable development

Hasina Rakotondraina is the national coordinator and founder of JADD Madagascar, she holds degrees in geography and tourism and she has been deeply involved in environmental initiatives since 2009, creating an association focused on environmental action. In 2013, she founded JADD (Jeunes Actifs pour le Développement Durable) with a simple yet ambitious goal: mobilizing youth to become agents of change within their communities. “I believe that young people’s energy and enthusiasm are essential drivers for sustainable societal development.” says Hasina.

Since its creation, JADD has incorporated economic and social dimensions into its programs, reaching a broader audience that includes women and local communities. Today, JADD is an NGO that promotes, among other things, green entrepreneurship, focusing on sustainable economic practices to reduce environmental impact, and blue entrepreneurship, which emphasizes marine and coastal ecosystem sustainability. It also supports social inclusion initiatives and the sustainable management of natural resources.

One of PPI’s flagship projects is the SEEED program, which is the result of a partnership with the European Union. This program aims to create decent jobs in Madagascar by strengthening the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. SEEED is an “incubator of incubators”: it supports entrepreneurial support structures (ESS) in improving their services for entrepreneurs, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, including youth, women, and people with disabilities.

PPI’s support in strengthening SSE

PPI’s support has played a crucial role in JADD Madagascar’s growth, helping it professionalize and expand its impact. According to Hasina Rakotondraina, “PPI’s support allowed us to meaningfully adjust our strategy and professionalize our approach to entrepreneurship, with a special focus on promoting the social and solidarity economy.” Thanks to this partnership, JADD has gained access to specific training, networking opportunities, and valuable collaborations with other ESS.

Sitraka Nantenaina Rasoanaivo, a program manager at JADD, also highlights the importance of PPI’s support: “PPI helped us better structure our activities through personalized coaching and targeted training, which strengthened our skills in sustainable and green entrepreneurship.

Tangible impacts on local communities

PPI’s support goes beyond training, enabling JADD to overcome major organizational challenges. “With PPI, we recognized the internal changes needed to improve our operations. This not only strengthened our structure but also allowed us to build connections with international technical and financial partners.” explains Sitraka Nantenaina Rasoanaivo. Collaborations with organizations such as BIC AFRICA and FADESIM in the Comoros have opened new avenues, facilitating experience exchanges and capacity building that promise long-term benefits.

Among JADD’s proudest achievements are initiatives in civic and electoral education, aimed at raising Malagasy citizens’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities. “This project helps strengthen democracy and encourages active civic participation.” mentions Hasina. Additionally, JADD launched an ambitious initiative on social inclusion and sustainable resource management, which received an international award from the Global Environment Facility in 2023.

Groupe SOS and PPI’s commitment to Madagascar

With continued support from PPI, JADD Madagascar and other local organizations are working toward a future where the social and solidarity economy plays a central role in the country’s sustainable development. Through professionalization, training, and networking, PPI is establishing itself as a crucial player in building a fairer and more inclusive economic landscape.

Madagascar, rich in natural resources and human capital, can rely on initiatives led by PPI and local project leaders to strengthen community resilience, protect the environment, and encourage responsible and innovative entrepreneurship.
