LEZ4All: a European project by Auxilia to reduce the social risks of Low Emission Zones

16 September 2024 • NEWS

Auxilia, part of Groupe SOS and a key player in promoting inclusive mobility, social justice, and environmental sustainability, has unveiled its innovative new project, LEZ4All (Low Emission Zone for All), supported by the European Erasmus+ program. This ambitious project focuses on the social impacts of Low Emission Zones (LEZ) in Europe, aiming to mitigate the risk of exclusion for vulnerable communities. In collaboration with leading European partners, LEZ4All aims to develop practical solutions and training tools to better support populations affected by environmental policies.

The social impacts of Low Emission Zones are often underestimated. As more than 200 European cities introduce LEZs to restrict access for polluting vehicles, these measures can exacerbate mobility challenges for low-income populations, who often rely on older, less environmentally friendly vehicles.

LEZ4All aims to improve the skills and knowledge of professionals working with people affected by LEZs. It seeks to develop innovative training tools and enhance the capabilities of sector stakeholders to better support vulnerable communities.

The project will include:

  • A quantitative study: conducted in key cities such as Barcelona, Brussels, Lyon, and Madrid, this study will assess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of professionals regarding the social impacts of LEZs.
  • Workshops and experiments: social workers and mobility experts will test innovative working methods.
  • Development of resources: production of professional training modules, including a guide for trainers, to equip professionals in supporting vulnerable groups.

A project with European dimensions

Auxilia leads this project in collaboration with notable institutions such as Area Metropolitana de Barcelona, Brussels Environment, and the University of Antwerp, as well as French communities like the cities of Lyon and Limoges. This partnership will facilitate the sharing of results and the development of transferable public policies, with the goal of creating comparative experiments in several European cities.

Funded by Erasmus+, this project allows Auxilia to play a key role in implementing inclusive policies for LEZs. The LEZ4All project aspires to create significant changes for a just ecological and social transition, ensuring that environmental measures do not leave anyone behind.
